I use both myself, as I think either are allowed.

My take on "pause" vs. "beat" is this:  "Beat" represents a natural break, like taking a deep breath, or preparing to switch the subject.  "Pause" signifies a stoppage several beats long.

Like I said, it's my opinion.  Worth everything you paid for it.

I have read that both are acceptable.  I have seen both used, but I use beat, because it feels natural to me.  Pause, feels like everything should stop, but beat sounds like the speaker is stopping for a beat, like in music.

Can I use ‘pause’ instead of ‘beat’ to indicate a moment of silence in a dialogue?
