Silly puns aside, you're right.  I pick up a little money ghost-writing ("editing," I call it, but "re-write" is more accurate) prep-school and college admission essays.  My response to this frequently bad writing is akin to how I feel when dealing with crime:  It's a bloody shame, but then it's so pervasive I'm just use to it.   Speaking of which, police reports usually stink, too. I've seen two pages of narrative, all upper case, replete with spelling and grammatical errors,  go on without a single paragraph break!  Shocked Attorneys typically analyze these behemoths with variously colored highlighters.   Undecided

For the distant future, I've been mentally sketching a story about a lowly traffic cop who finds himself dealing with a strange homicide, all by himself: no sergeants, lieutenants, detectives, or crime-scene specialists available.....nobody!  Maybe a comic mystery.....

Lordy!  We need more of you.  I've read about a thousand scripts and that's the number one failing ... incorrect word usage or just plain crappy English.  We speak our minds around here.  I like to think we will say what an agent or producer won't tell writers.  If it sucks, we say, nicely if possible.  New writers NEED to know when their work just isn't good enough.  There's a section on the main site under  Articles --> Writing Style

Handy site--I bookmarked it.

I'm an (old school) English major who went into law enforcement.  You know what that makes me?  a grammar cop!   Tongue

There is a troublesome words section that I found to be especially helpful.
