Silly puns aside, you're right. I pick up a little money ghost-writing ("editing," I call it, but "re-write" is more accurate) prep-school and college admission essays. My response to this frequently bad writing is akin to how I feel when dealing with crime:
It's a bloody shame, but then it's so pervasive I'm just use to it. Speaking of which, police reports usually stink, too. I've seen two pages of narrative, all upper case, replete with spelling and grammatical errors, go on without a single paragraph break!

Attorneys typically analyze these behemoths with variously colored highlighters.

For the distant future, I've been mentally sketching a story about a lowly traffic cop who finds himself dealing with a strange homicide, all by himself: no sergeants, lieutenants, detectives, or crime-scene specialists available.....nobody! Maybe a comic mystery.....
