I think it's because he intends to direct it, so he adds stuff like this as to the kind of performance he's after.

I'm reading WA's Deconstructing Harry and I was wondering if this part in the script, where he's talking about ad-libbing, is the norm for today. Can we use terms like this or is it in here bc this is his movie and he's directing it as well? Thanks.
Woody is... well, Woody.  He writes the way he writes.
I don't really think this passage, especially the wryly about ad-libbing, is standard... but, as I said, it's Woody.
