John, 34, debonairly pompous, exits the house blah blah.

This is perfectly acceptable.

My two drachmas worth...

One of the best character intros I've read was in Lawrence Kasdan's Body Heat...

A character was introduced as a "rock and roll arsonist".

Quite a line, isn't it?

For a pompous twit, you could say something like, oh, I don't know, "pouter pigeon puffy"...

By the way, the alliteration was quite accidental.

Cheers!

Newbie, and first of all I would just like to say a massive thanks for some excellent advice given on this forum.

My query is knowing what information, or how much information, should you give when introducing main characters for the first time. For argument sake let's say one of your characters was 'pompous', would you include this in describing the character for the first time. e.g.  John, 34, debonairly pompous, exits the house blah blah.

Thanks in advance
