I can only relate my personal experience and EVERYONE'S experience is different. I write with a certain detachment from the story. Scenes, no matter how good or perfect ... if they do not serve the story ... get hacked out. My detachment allows me not get all tangled up in the story. For me, screenwriting is a two-step process ... do the research and outline the story on 4x6 cards taped to a wall (including character profiles) and when you're all done ... THE FUN BEGINS ... I sit down and start banging it all out. This is the part that's the most fun and most creative.

Thank you so much for the welcome! Uncle Al, I would like to direct someday that is my ultimate goal, I also have a passion for writing. To be honest writing and possibly directing someday is just about the only career I can see myself in for the rest of my life. I've had a love for writing and movies since I can remember and it took me 24 years to get it through my head and to drown out the voices of a handful of critics. Since I've begun to dig into screenwriting in particular it has sparked such a desire to learn and learn and learn. To be quite honest I feel reborn, as if this creativity has been pent up and all at once it's beginning to be realized. Or in short, I'm excited and overwhelmed at the same time LOL! But once again thank you and I look forward to the help you provide and hopefully someday returning the favor.

Well, from one AJ to another, welcome!

As for your alternatives, let's examine them.
Film School?  Maybe... do you want to direct or produce?  That might be the route to go.
Collaboration?  Finding a collaborator is about as hard as finding the right spouse.  When you do, it's worth it, though...
Keep reading?  Always.  No equivocation here.
"Give up, you're doomed"?  Let me put it this way... If you can be discouraged from writing, you should be.  {Not original with me - I forget the attribution, though...}
Those of us who have no choice keep on because nothing else will do... If this is you, welcome to our proud and lonely band of brothers (even the women are our brothers in this case).

Ask for help, you'll get it... offer help, you'll get more than you thought possible.

Welcome.

Cheers!

Hi everyone, just happened to stumble upon this site and it looks like just what I needed! I'm 24 and just recently began to self-educate myself on screenwriting and directing (I've read some Syd Field books and done the standard internet searches lol) needless to say I'm just starting out down the path leading me to my frist script. I'm hoping that someone on the message board is much more experienced and would like to share with me their opinions on how I should navigate this path...film school? collaboration? keep reading? give up your doomed?...Any responses would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!
